Medical graduates stay - House of Lords

The House of Lords has rules that the NHS cannot discriminate against international medical graduates looking to either enter, or stay in the UK.

The decision is a welcome one for 8000 international medical graduates presently in the UK under the Highly skilled migrants program who may have had to relinquish their graduate position should the decision have been otherwise.

There are major implications for opportunities to domestic medical graduates.  Previously there have been shortages of medical graduates making employment easy for them upon graduation.

Now domestic graduates will find these posts keenly contested with many finding they end up without a position this following the summer.  Although in the medium term there will be a compensatory action of reducing the import of highly skilled workers, the new rules are being phased in gradually, meaning there will be a substantially excess of medical graduates until then
