When to start looking for graduate jobs

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘your future starts here!’? Well it’s not a bad one when considering your future career as a graduate. Too many graduates finish their degree and begin interviewing for jobs with a kind of ‘well I’ll go and have a look and see what I think’ mentality to their first job interviews.

Not only will this approach yield few results in terms of jobs offers, interviews themselves are a poor place for research and will not teach you what you want to know.

Graduate jobs nterviews generally are highly competitive and perhaps even more so for graduate jobs. Unless you turn up fully researched and absolutely sure that this really ‘is’ the job for you, you will loose out to someone else who portrays that degree of certainty and commitment about what they want to do.

If you want a successful career, you need to start as you mean to go on and treat finding the right graduate career, and ultimately your first job, as a professional task that needs to be done, and needs to be done properly. Devote time within your degree to researching potential roles, different industries, and even considering different locations where you might like to live. The internet now is pretty comprehensive. Once you have homed in on a particular sector, try to make contact with people already in that sector, ideally graduates who have recently made the journey you are looking to make and see what you can learn.

Most institutions have excellent careers advisory services and are often under used, you will also find a variety of advisory services online. Be wary of people with strong opinions on one particular route, after all it’s your future not theirs at stake. However, the more people you talk to the more your ideas will evolve.

The very process you go through in determining the direction you wish to take will provide you with an excellent example of your work ethic to demonstrate at job interviews. If an employers asks you how you have decided on this particular career ( and they likely will!) and your reply details a comprehensive list of systematic research resulting in a firm decision to which you are utterly committed, you are displaying highly desirable traits and a strong work ethic.

Good luck
